Pioneering for Ocean Research together with Fassmer
“The understanding of ocean resources and their sustainable exploration is key when exploring the ocean’s depths,” says Managing Director Håkon Fauske at SEAONICS. “As lift and handling specialists, we work closely with pioneering researchers, shipyards, and institutions that explore and study the ocean.”
Tailored Solutions Created by Specialists
The German shipyard Fassmer has partnered with SEAONICS to develop tailored equipment for deep-sea exploration. “We’re glad to collaborate with Fassmer to expand what design and technology can achieve,” says Fauske.
Sales Manager Knut Molnes elaborates, "One of our key innovations for Walther Herwig is a drop keel that will allow the vessel to carry high-tech research equipment and operate more efficiently at sea."
The drop keel's innovative design, featuring low-noise performance, enables Walther Herwig to perform advanced data collection and sampling with minimal interference to sensitive sensors. This feature is essential for supporting accurate research in marine biology, geology, and climate science.
By combining proven technology with a team of specialists dedicated to innovation, we ensure that researchers and explorers have the specialized equipment they need to advance our understanding of the ocean.

The contract with Fassmer reinforces SEAONICS’ commitment to the research vessel segment.
Building on the experience gained from equipping the icebreaker-class vessel “Kronprins Haakon,” SEAONICS has deepened its understanding of these specialized operations, enabling our specialists to provide even more advanced support for researchers and vessel designers in shaping the next generation of research vessels.
A Focus on Research and EU Partnerships
SEAONICS stays closely connected to the Ocean Research and Exploration segment, actively engaging with institutes, shipyards, and stakeholders in the industry. Molnes highlights that EU programs supporting new research and exploration vessels present exciting opportunities for the future.
“These programs are valuable, as they create new possibilities for deeper ocean exploration and resource discovery,” says Molnes.
